By 1980, vinyl lettering was introduced in a variety of colors and aluminum signs were introduced. Shortly, thereafter, screen printing became popular. Now many of the signs you see are done by flat bed printing. A system whereby full color is applied directly onto the metal.

Metal signs and aluminum signs for your next exterior sign project

Both types of signs have a number of advantages. Your material choice depends on the job you have to complete. A metal sign is heavier and therefore has wider application if your sign is not secured on all four corners. Aluminum is especially useful for outdoor way finding, parking lot and traffic signs. For these applications choose .080 gauge.

From a cost point of view, metal signs are somewhat less expensive. But we suggest pricing your next job out on both types of material, especially if the metal sign is going to be exposed to moisture or hide humidity for an extended period of time. Be sure to check out e-panel. (also know as alumilite) It is a PVC material sandwiched in between two pieces of thin gauge aluminum. Sizes available for all material are up to 5feet x 10feet.
